Vani Jayaram (1945-2023): Remembering India’s Legendary Voice

Vani Jayaram, the Legendary Playback Singer, who recently completed her 50 years of professional singing, has passed away on 4th February in Chennai. She sung over 10,000 songs in 19 languages and was a recent recipient of Padma Bhushan, the-third-highest-civilian award in India. Besides bagging the state awards from Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Gujarat, and Odisha, Vani Jayaram won National Film Awards thrice for the Best Playback Singer. The first time she received the award, was for the songs in ‘Apoorva Raagangal’ in 1975 and again in 1980 for the songs in ‘Sankarabharanam’. ‘Anathaniyara Hara. . .’ again made her won National Award in 1991.

Vani collaborated with the prime music composers from various industries to deliver record-breaking hits. Some of the renowned music composers of the industry that the veteran singer worked with are: MS Viswanathan, RD Burman, Ilaiyaraaja, OP Nayyar, Madan Mohan and KV Mahadevan and others. Known to be one of India’s Legendary Voices, she imparted different kinds of song while working with different music composers of the industry.

Born in Vellore, Vani’s real name was Kalaivani. True to her name, the singer was a finest artist when it comes to music. Her husband predeceased her and from then, the 77-year-old singer was residing alone in the downtown part of Chennai. The couple had no children. However, she was found dead by her maid on 4th February in her apartment.

India’s Legendary Voice:

The India’s finest singer produced number of chartbusters including the most popular Hindi song, “Bole Re Papihara”. Composed by Vasant Desai, Vani Jayaram brilliantly sung the song thereby creating a masterpiece in Bollywood. But her intellectual voice did not thrive in the Bollywood music world. Nevertheless, her contribution to music is immeasurable. Vani had created everlasting hits in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Urdu, Marathi, Bengali, Bhojpuri, Tulu and Oriya. The prominent singer’s songs were a source of inspiration to many. Speaking of which, “Megamae, Megamae”, a Tamil song composed by Shankar-Ganesh, and beautifully sung by Vani, inspired many ghazal singers of North of India. Her excellent classical rendition was at its finest and can never be replaced. The acclaimed singer will, definitely, remain to be voices of all seasons, and Nightingale of South.

Lyricist Vairamuthu took his Instagram handle to mourn the sad demise of the queen of south with his lyrics of the song “Megamae, Megamae” sung by Vani, herself.
