World Diabetes Day – Nov 14

By Editor on November 14, 2022

The International Diabetes Foundation as well as the World Health Organization first established World Diabetes Day on November 14 of each year. Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the pancreas either produces insufficient insulin or none at all. It can be prevented in many ways and also results in serious health conditions. That is why we are using this day to raise awareness and educate people.

It is believed that diabetes first appeared around 1550 BC. It took until 1922 for insulin to be extracted and administered to humans successfully. Therefore, in comparison to the long, arduous march that diabetes has made through history, our understanding of it is quite recent. The distinction between type two and type one first emerged around 1850, when medical professionals thought they understood the differences well enough to justify two categories. Since then, the number of people worldwide estimated to have type II diabetes has risen to $425 million, accounting for 90% of those affected.

Among the reasons the WHO and IDF decided to establish World Diabetes Day was to raise awareness of the dramatic increase in such a treatable illness and to encourage healthy lifestyle choices. Given that diabetes has an estimated $727 billion economic cost worldwide, managing blood sugar levels on a regular basis is a time-consuming as well as expensive endeavour (USD). We should raise consciousness about the disease and commemorate the creation of the man who contributed to the development of insulin as a successful treatment for it because of how expensive and preventable it is.

Why is World Diabetes Day Important?
It serves as a reminder to stay informed about diabetes

Although type I diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes, poses an equally serious health risk, type II diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. Type I diabetes affects about 1.25 million people in the United States, but there is no known cause for the condition. But just like type II diabetes, the consequences are disastrous for your health. The purpose of World Diabetes Day is to raise awareness of diabetes symptoms, promote testing, and encourage treatment.

It raises awareness of the diabetes epidemic

Diagnosis of diabetes increased by about 380% over a 25-year period, from 1988 to 2013. Furthermore, these diagnoses are risky; according to the World Health Organization, diabetes will rank as the seventh most prevalent cause of death globally by the year 2030. It is essential to dedicate an entire day to this condition because it requires attention.

Diabetes type II can be prevented

It’s important to lead healthier lives, and World Diabetes Day serves as an excellent reminder of that. Healthy eating, consistent exercise, and trying to maintain a normal body weight can all reduce the risk of type II diabetes. It is best to avoid tobacco use because it worsens type II diabetes as well.

Ways to celebrate World Diabetes Day:
Test yourself

Diabetes can cause a number of symptoms, including but not limited to excessive urination, thirst, constant hunger, loss of body weight, changes in vision, as well as fatigue. Additionally, type II diabetes is much more likely to develop if you are overweight or obese. The prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes in adults is thought to be one in two. Remind yourself to get tested on World Diabetes Day if you have any health conditions or symptoms.

Wear the blue circle logo

The blue circle symbol is used as a global awareness tool for diabetes. To raise awareness of this deadly condition and its effects, wear a T-shirt, necklace, or bracelet bearing the World Diabetes Day logo or make one yourself.

Set up a diabetes fair

Join forces with local health authorities to promote a diabetes fair in your workplace or neighbourhood. Start providing information on how people can avoid type II diabetes and maintain their health, as well as screenings for the disease.
