Khyber, Mumbai’s Iconic North-West Frontier Restaurant, Celebrates 65 Years of Culinary Excellence and Heritage

In a city known for its dynamic pace, Khyber restaurant stands as a testament to enduring excellence, celebrating a remarkable 65 years of operation this year. This landmark anniversary marks six and a half decades of serving authentic North-West Frontier cuisine from its iconic location in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda art district. More than just a restaurant, Khyber is a cherished institution, renowned for its rich Mughlai flavours, succulent kebabs, signature dishes like Paneer Korma and the majestic Khyber Raan, and an unwavering commitment to quality that has drawn generations of diners, including global celebrities and royalty.

Khyber’s journey is a captivating Mumbai story that reflects the city’s own resilience. Founded in 1958 by O.P. Bahl, it rose from humble beginnings to become a city favourite. Its resilience was proven when, after a devastating fire in 1985 threatened its existence, the Bahl family didn’t just rebuild, they reimagined. Collaborating with renowned designer Parmeshwar Godrej, Khyber reopened in 1988, transformed into a stunning space featuring hand-carved Rajasthani arches, commissioned pieces by M.F. Husain and Anjolie Ela Menon, and intimate dining alcoves that transport guests to another world. This rebirth set a new standard for fine dining outside of five-star hotels.

What’s the secret to Khyber’s 65-year reign? Throughout these changes, Khyber’s commitment to authentic flavors has never wavered. Signature dishes like the legendary Khyber Raan, Tandoori Jhinga, and Paneer Korma, and around 80% of the menu favorites have remained consistent for decades, prepared by dedicated cooks trained in-house, a deliberate choice that ensures the consistency Khyber is famous for. It’s this reliability, combined with the unique, art-filled ambiance and warm hospitality, that fosters deep loyalty, turning first-time visitors into regulars and making it a must-visit for luminaries like Sir Paul McCartney, Richard Gere, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, and more.

Sudheer Bahl, who took the helm after the fire and guided Khyber’s resurgence, reflects on the core philosophy: “Reaching 65 years is truly special. It comes down to respecting the food and the guest experience above all else. My father always emphasized consistency – ensuring that the flavours people expect, the quality they trust, is delivered every single time. That dedication has been our guiding principle.”

Looking towards the future while honouring the past is now a key focus, with the third generation, Ishaan Bahl, actively involved. “It’s an incredible legacy to be part of,” says Ishaan. “People have such a strong connection to Khyber; they know exactly what they want, often the same dishes they’ve enjoyed for years. While we’re carefully refreshing elements of the restaurant, like the Husain Room, and exploring subtle menu additions, preserving that core experience and the authentic taste is paramount. Our 65th anniversary is not just about longevity, it’s a celebration of the countless memories created here and the culinary traditions we’ve preserved through decades of change.”

As Khyber celebrates this rare milestone, it invites Mumbai and the world to experience a living piece of culinary history – a place where tradition, resilience, art, and exceptional flavour have thrived for sixty-five extraordinary years.
