Naushad Ali has always taken references from his surroundings: South Indian culture, the French influence in Pondicherry and the people around him. For his SS22 collection, once again, his inspiration is drawn from the people in his life. This time, his focus is on their multicultural backgrounds. “This collection is very personal to me, I am moved by the people in my life who have shared their stories with me and who I’ve shared close connections with. Their parents come from different countries with completely different customs and languages but they are now living in India with a strong sense of Indian culture (my own son happens to be a Swiss-French Caribbean-Tamil mix). I am both fascinated and inspired by their diversity. They tend to have an interesting skin colour and a distinctive accent. They look, talk and behave differently. They borrow their tastes from different worlds. They are unique.”

Exposed only to South Indian traditional culture when growing up in Tamil Nadu, Naushad is aware that his life today is also a mix of cultures. “I think there are two kinds of mixes, those who are mixed by birth and those who are mixed by choice.” Naushad has always been interested in the best of different worlds, whether it be music, art or design. “I always felt that there was so much to see and so much to grasp from every culture. Pondicherry, a place which has a little bit of this blend, has made the feeling a reality for me.”

The SS22 collection puts together elements from all over, being creative with traditional craft and presenting it in a contemporary way. “I like the way these kids do it. They have a fearless, fresh sense of style.” The collection has beautiful handmade crochet, screen printed florals & polkas, handwoven vintage stripes & checks, and hand embroidered details from Pondicherry. “I like to mix. It’s fascinating to see how different things can coexist and how contrasting elements that you initially think won’t fit together end up combining beautifully.”

The campaign is photographed by Andreas Deffner, a German photographer who has been living in India for the past 30 years. It is styled by Tania Fadte and the Hair & Make-up is by Mitesh Rajani. Most of the models have been cast locally and they are all a ‘mix’.
