The centre for science and environment study found higher levels of potassium bromate and potassium iodate in sandwich breads, pav breads and buns. The study showed that the bread available in India has toxic chemicals that could lead to thyroid problems and cancer.
Products of five popular chains including Dominos, Pizza hut, Subway, Mc Donalds and Slice of Italy have high amount of chemicals. The deputy director of CSE says, “Just two slices of bread every day is enough to put us at a higher risk of thyroid and cancer,” The organisation picked 38 samples from Delhi outlets and tested them for potassium bromate and potassium iodate and more than 84 percent of the samples turned out to be positive. The report confirms higher levels of chemicals in bread and less in multi-grain breads.
After warnings from the Wealth Health Organisation, about 40 countries stopped using potassium bromated and potassium iodate that is used to treat flour while baking. The All India Bread Manufacturers Association gave a statement that they haven’t seen any reports yet and that Food safety and Standards Authority of India’s regulations permit the use of Potassium Bromate and/or Potassium Iodate at 50 ppm Max for bread and at 20 ppm Max for Bakery purpose. The health minister urges people to wait for the report and not panic. We will have to wait and watch to see if the government bans these chemicals as requested by CSE.
