National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) is geared up to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence with multi-genre events throughout August 2022. Encompassing genres across Indian Music, Dance, Theatre, and International Music, the festival will bring together themes to celebrate India’s legacy, independence journey, and new India’s ideologies and struggles.
It brings to life the voice of women today, a take on celebrating national occasions, and stories of Indian independence with remarkable moments from some freedom fighters’ lives. All of these are expressed through music and theatre and unique voices across generations, genres, and story-telling styles.
NCPA Independence celebration of Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav begins on 5th August featuring some of the well-known names like Shubha Mudgal, Gulzar, Jayanthi Kumaresh, Kaushiki Chakrabarty, Papon, Shantanu Moitra and many more.

Dawn at Midnight
14th August 2022 | Jamshed Bhabha Theatre
We have the honour and privilege of ushering in the 76th year of Indian independence with Gulzar, the celebrated poet, writer, lyricist, and film director. On the other hand, Shantanu Moitra, the renowned music composer known for his many landmark Bollywood films, represents the generation nurtured in the environment of post-independent India. Presenting work specially written for this grand occasion, Gulzar will take us through the journey of 75 years of free India. Around his verses, Moitra will weave the magic of original compositions specially created for this landmark event.
Songs of Freedom
15th August 2022 | Tata Theatre
Songs of Freedom, musically directed by pianist Merlin Dsouza, brings melodies that inspire, entertain, and celebrate 75 years of Indian independence. The Orchestra of the Armed Forces, vocalists, rappers, leading musicians of the country, and a ventriloquist will perform during an evening that will celebrate India’s journey through music.

Mohan’s Masala featuring Pratik Gandhi of Scam 1992 fame, brings to life the lost world of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, through whom we discover that a lot of the Mahatma’s lessons were taught by these lost memories of ordinary life.
