Like many parts of the country and the world, Kerala seems to be suffering from an overdose of drinking. The Government has come up with a plan that they deem is fool proof and the only way to deal with this issue. What is that? Well, simple! They have decided to ban alcohol from the state completely. This they say will stop people from drinking thereby putting an end to the issue.
The first phase of the ban will have nearly 700 bars and quite a few shops shut down. Apart from this, they will add on many more ‘dry days” to the yearly calendar. What is more, the Government plans on enforcing a complete prohibition in 10 years time. It has been noted that Kerala has the highest per capita liquor consumption which stands at 8 liters per person annually. Drinking is also the lead cause of most accidents in the state.
The Chief Minister of Kerala, Oomnen Chandy has stated that the Congress-led government has come up with a few plans such as,
Shutting down 730 bars that serve alcohol
Adding on to existing no alcohol days, they also plan to make Sundays a part of this scheme. High end luxury hotels will be given permit to serve alcohol from 2015 only. About 10% of the liquor shops that are owned by a state-run monopoly will be shut down on a yearly basis. In total there are about 338 such stores. While all this sounds good, the general reaction to this rule is that it will not only affect Tourism but also lead to people bringing in liquor from other parts of the country. Another aspect is that Alcohol industry is what brings in nearly 20% of the revenue.
Not really sure if this is the way forward, only time will tell!
