The Mangroves’ lagoon and a boat ride is something you must experience. The lagoon is located 8 kms from the town of Muthupet in Tiruvarur district and lies adjacent to the Bay of Bengal and southernmost part of the Cauvery delta. Only through boat you can reach to this place.
The place covered by forest on either side, splendid view the as you reach the point where the brackish water meets the sea. On the way you will see amazing birds which is a visual treat to photography and bird watchers.
Though you have a hat, an umbrella is essential. This will prevent the UV in mid-day in the hot creeks while returning. Carry plenty of water (don’t throw any bottles!!!), fruits and biscuits as you will be hungry. You can have your food anyone of resting huts, constructed by Tamil Nadu Forest Department.
Best time to visit this place is during the monsoon season – November to January. Preferred time to enter the Muthupet Forest is early morning, when the birds and fishers are busy in the canals.
This town is popularly known for its coconut and fishing as well as Aqua Farms. The ancient occupation of the people is fishing.
Muthupet is around 348 kms from Chennai. You can take a train or bus to Thanjavur and then hire a personal cab or local transport to reach Muthupet.
