Monica (23) is an entrepreneur who runs Mystic, a venture for earth-friendly alternatives and services. Praveen (27) is a lead to a team of engineers at Continental Data Graphics, a Boeing Company and this couple did something noble that many of us would not even have thought of doing.

After a vegan-friendly engagement on world vegan day, the eco-conscious couple celebrated their love for each other by throwing a unique, completely eco-friendly and vegan (free from ghee, silk and other animal derived products) wedding on World Environment Day.

What you have to know about the wedding?

Monica Pandian and Praveen Raj decided to have a green wedding because they wanted to exercise their choice to provide a better planet for the future generations. They have gone out of their way to make their wedding eco friendly and vegan friendly. Here’s how- They had speeches and messages by renowned personalities about the environment, conservation of ecosystem and animal welfare. The invites were made of eco-friendly handmade paper for relatives and e-paper for friends.  The invites had information about veganism and persuaded guests to avoid silk, leather, and fur and plastics for the event.

The groom wore Handloom organic Rain-fed cotton dyed naturally got from Tula and Anokhi and the bride wore Handloom organic natural dyed cotton saree from Co-optex made into a dress, and another naturally dyed indigo cotton dress from Anokhi. The couple teamed these clothes up with Eco-friendly cotton based shoes with soles made of recycled tyres from the company Paaduks. Jungle Jewels made the jewellery using seeds and grains.  This jewellery from Jungle Jewels was selected because using diamonds would mean using immense mining and human slavery.

There’s more!

The food was completely plant based prepared by the venue management.  The decorations were made using Samadhi flower (composted afterwards) and they used the sri mridangam as it not made by animal skin. The guests got handmade organic cotton bags from ‘The Yellow Bag’ with fruits, beetle leaves and information booklet on veganism. The wedding also had documentary screenings related to nature.  The event was held outdoors in the gardens of VGP resort to avoid electricity usage.  The wedding had about 500 to 600 guests and is the first eco-friendly wedding in Chennai.

The Couple’s message

‘This is the first eco-friendly wedding in Chennai. Maybe after seeing ours, many of our friends would  get inspired to do the same. And when it gets on the media, more public people who come across might give it a thought. What we feel is, there is a lack of awareness about living sustainably. Many are focussing on planting tress and doing terrace gardening, forgetting the fact that one day of a big fat indian wedding is enough to cause a huge destructive impact on the planet.’

The couple who celebrated their love for each other by having an eco-friendly vegan wedding also hope that people may change their attitude towards conserving Mother Nature and make positive changes in their lifestyle.  Their theme-Make the connection was indeed successful and they are happy that they were able to share their passionately held belief that animals and humans are all connected within nature.  The wedding was not missing in any element. It was overflowing with food, people and music. We appreciate them for taking such intense effort and looking into the smallest of details to go with their green concept.

Measures taken:

•Invites: Eco-friendly Handmade paper invites for family relatives and e-invites for friends. Invites have info on veganism and mentioned its an eco-friendly wedding, also persuading guests to avoid silk, leather, fur and plastics at the venue.

•Clothing: Groom will wear Handloom organic Rain-fed cotton dyed naturally got from Tula and Anokhi.  Bride will wear Handloom organic natural dyed cotton saree from Co-optex made into a dress, and another naturally dyed indigo cotton dress from Anokhi.

•Footwear: Eco-friendly cotton based shoes with soles made of recycled tyres from the company Paaduks.

•Jewellery: Made by the company Jungle Jewels using seeds and grains. No gold or diamonds for the fact that they need immense mining and human slavery. We do not need to hurt the planet and others to look beautiful.

•Food: 100% Plant-based prepared by the venue management.

•Decorations: Only natural decor using ‘samandhi’ (marigold) flowers, which will be composted after the event.

•The musical instruments: Usually hindu weddings have nadaswaram and tavil that are made of animal skins. There was no alternatives here before. But now, we are having musicians playing the SRI Mridangam that is not made of animal skin. The synthetic fibreglass shell mridangam is designed by vocalist and scientist Dr. K. Varadarangan of Karunya Musicals in Bengaluru. This is very important and something that makes the wedding completely cruelty-free and vegan!

•Favours: Handmade organic cotton bags from The Yellow Bag with fruits, beetle leaves, and with an information booklet on Veganism.
