Chennai’s Zara, the Tapas Bar gets rebranded as Sera
In the year 2015, the popular Spanish clothing store ‘Zara’ moved a plea to stop Zara, the Tapas Bar from using its brand name. According to the high court, there is only Zara because it chose the name first and it comes under the best 50 brands in the world. The Spanish brand filed a suit last year through an advocate and said that the bar was trying to use its name to gain popularity in the country.
Zara, the Tapas bar calls itself a Spanish joint but actually serves a lot of Mexican food. Also claimed that ‘Zar’a was a common name as they were not close to each other in terms of location, it wouldn’t confuse anybody. But the bar could not succeed in their argument when it was found that all their ads said that it was Mexican joint. One of the flyers of Zara, the Tapas Bar said , ‘Come and Try the Mexican Menu’.
They later tried to defend themselves by saying that the name is a province in Spain. The court did not accept these explanations given by the popular pub in Chennai. The court said that the name only belonged to the famous retailer Zara as the retailer was popular and known by that name worldwide for a long time. The case was happening from the year June 2015.
It has taken the pub one full year to execute the change and now they have been rebranded as Sera, the Tapas Bar. Let’s give ourselves some time for the name to sink in!
