Tata Sampann Ganesh Chaturthi Recipe – Saffron Dryfruit Modak

SAFFRON & DRY FRUIT MODAK

Ingredients

For the Rice Dough

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1¼ cups water
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • Pinch of salt

For the Filling

  • 1 cup Tata Sampann Dry Fruits & Nuts Mix, finely chopped
  • 4 Tata Sampann dates (Deseeded), finely chopped or pureed
  • 2 tbsp grated jaggery
  • 2 tbsp fresh grated coconut
  • 2 tbsp Tata Sampann dried figs (anjeer), finely chopped
  • 8-10 saffron strands, soaked in 1 tbsp warm milk or water
  • ¼ tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tsp ghee

Method

Prepare the Filling

  1. Heat 1 tsp ghee in a pan.
  2. Add the Tata Sampann Dry Fruits & Nuts Mix and lightly roast for 2 minutes.
  3. Add chopped dates, dried figs, grated coconut and jaggery.
  4. Cook on low heat until the mixture comes together.
  5. Stir in saffron along with the soaking liquid and cardamom powder.
  6. Mix well and cook for another minute.
  7. Remove from heat and allow the filling to cool completely.

Prepare the Rice Dough

  1. Bring water, ghee and salt to a boil in a pan.
  2. Lower the flame and add rice flour gradually.
  3. Mix quickly until no dry flour remains.
  4. Cover and rest for 3-4 minutes.
  5. Transfer to a plate and knead while still warm to form a smooth, soft dough.

Shape the Modaks

  1. Grease your palms lightly with ghee.
  2. Divide the dough into 12-14 equal portions.
  3. Shape each portion into a small cup by gently pressing and thinning the edges.
  4. Place 1-2 teaspoons of filling in the center.
  5. Gather the edges into pleats and seal at the top to form a traditional modak shape.

Steam

  1. Arrange the modaks in a greased steamer.
  2. Steam for 10-12 minutes until the outer covering becomes glossy.
  3. Remove and allow them to rest for 2 minutes.
  4. Brush lightly with a little ghee and garnish with a few saffron strands.
