Dr Chhya Vaja, Internal Medicine Expert, Apollo Spectra Mumbai

Many men tend to struggle with high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, cancer, prostate problems, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and even kidney and liver damage that need timely attention. However, these health conditions can remain hidden for years in men. Hence, it is necessary to go for regular health check-ups and follow-ups, and improve the quality of life.

“I’m fine” is a common phrase used by a large number of men even when they don’t feel alright. Men may neglect their health owing to factors such as hectic lifestyles, family responsibilities, workplace pressures, or the belief that health concerns can wait; men are often less likely to seek medical help than women. They fail to seek help for symptoms such as fatigue and breathlessness until they become severe and impact their quality of life. Here, the expert explains the hidden health issues in men and advises seeking timely medical attention.

  • High blood pressure is known as a silent killer and doesn’t lead to noticeable symptoms for years. If left untreated, it can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney disease.
  •  Diabetes: Many symptoms, such as frequent thirst, urinationfatigue, and slow-healing wounds, are symptoms that many men overlook. Uncontrolled diabetes can damage the heart, kidneys, nerves, and eyes, and hence, timely management is important for the patient.
  • Meant well-being: Men can suffer from anxietydepression, or stress. They can notice symptoms such as irritability, anger, sleep disturbances, social withdrawal, or substance misuse. Men can withdraw emotionally, feel lonely, and experience a loss of motivation. So it is necessary to prioritize mental well-being right away. Men tend to suppress their feelings as they don’t want to be a burden on the family and suffer in silence. So, make sure to opt for counselling or join a support group and speak to other men struggling with the same problems.
  • Heat problems: Men should not ignore chest discomfort, fatigueshortness of breath, reduced stamina, and unexplained sweating, which may indicate an underlying heart problem that will demand timely attention.
  • Low Testosterone levels: So, warning signs such as constant tiredness, reduced muscle strength, low libido, mood changes, and difficulty concentrating can be associated with declining testosterone levels. Get it addressed by the expert without fail.
  • Prostate problems:  Are you aware? Frequent urination and difficulty passing urine can be linked to prostate problems in men. So, make sure to go for regular health check-ups and catch the hidden problems early.
