The pandemic led to many movies being held, many releases being pushed. With an increase in the movies that came out, quantity became the forefront rather than quality. Yet, we have picked out some Hindi films that we truly enjoyed. Here are some of the Best Hindi Films from 2022 that are now streaming online.
Best Hindi Films from 2022:
Qala
Written and directed by Anvita Dutt, Qala is probably the most original voice coming out in the last few years. Anvita Dutt is attracted to dramatic horror and draws us in her world. The film’s apparent flaws: the writing, the dialogue, acting and lip syncing in some places are bothersome. But Qala still manages to outshine all of them. The marriage of brilliant cinematography and out-of-the world production design is perfect. You feel like you’re in the 1940s in Kashmir, Calcutta and Bombay. It is a simple story but it feels fresh because films with ambitious women as the lead are still uncommon. And it was a delight to watch especially with its perfect soundtrack that is right out of the 40s. Amit Trivedi’s best work in recent years.
Qala is the story of Qala’s struggle and rise as an award-winning singer who is estranged from her mother. She is haunted by her past, the choices she made and the inherent exploitation of the industry, all of which become a part of her success. With & despite its flaws, Qala is beautiful, it is madness. It is the sole unique, singular, and feminist voice I’ve seen this year. It is also the best album of the year. Streaming on Netflix, you should watch this movie right away.

Monica, O My Darling
Written and directed by Vasan Bala’s Monica, O My Darling is a neo-noir crime – comedy – thriller. Our biggest complaint is that the movie was released on OTT because it feels like it was made to be enjoyed on the big screen with a theater full of strangers. It is sharply written, extremely fun, well shot and well edited with great performances by all the actors. The narrative rolls organically and keeps the audience throughout. It gives viewers the pleasure of predicting and figuring out the murder mystery but also surprises them. It is quirky throughout, loaded with good dialogue and humour.
The music of the film adds so to its texture and experience, it is impossible to imagine this film outside its banger soundtrack. It frames the film, enhances it from good to great, and makes it entertaining. Rajkummar Rao takes the center stage but Huma Qureshi is seen having so much fun with the character, as well as Radhika Apte who is hilarious. A fun, family entertainer, filled with old-school film references, Monica, O My Darling is streaming on Netflix.
Gangubai Kathiawadi
Gangubai Kathiawadi is not a great film, it’s good at best. But what makes it best is Alia Bhatt and her brilliant performance. Sanjay Bhansali does a decent job of world-building. But sometimes the production design is overwhelming, over-powering the story and its theme. Regardless, it is well-shot and edited and pretty impressive in many other aspects. The transformation of Gangu, Mumbai of the 70s and other technical aspects of the film make it an essential watch. Alia is fierce, vibrant, confident, and effortlessly phenomenal throughout the film and shines in every frame she occupies. It is streaming on Netflix.
Darlings
Darlings is a comedy-thriller directed by Jasmeet K Reen; written by Jasmeet K Reen & Parveez Shaikh. Darlings manages to shed much needed light on domestic violence and how it entraps its victims. It does so with humour and comedy to balance the painful and heartbreaking reality that a lot of women face. There’s not much to say except that everyone should watch it – women and men. Alia Bhatt, Shefali Shah, Vijay Verma and Roshan Mathews give phenomenal performances that make this film complete. Streaming now on Netflix.
Jhund
Written & Directed by Nagraj Manjule, Jhund is a great spin on the sports genre with a subtle/not so subtle commentary on the country’s class, caste and capitalist system that not only encourages poverty but also refuses to allow them to progress. It is amazingly shot (clean swift pans and dolly zooms) and crisply edited. With superstar Amitabh Bachchan at the front and non-actors playing most of its characters, Jhund feels nuances and entrenched in reality. The lead Ankush Gedam was a wonder to watch on screen – his pain, arrogance, struggle and hope managed to settle in the heart of the audience. Packed in the form of a mainstream entertainer, Jhund is a breath of fresh air amongst redundant, boring stories that Bollywood has been producing. Its dialogue needs special kudos because that added a lot of character to the film. It is a must-watch film. Jhund is cinema. Now streaming on Zee5.
