‘MAYA’: A Transdisciplinary Performance Exploring Identity, Ancestry, and the Feminine Creative Force
Maya is a transdisciplinary performance that unfolds at the intersection of movement, sound, visual art, and light, offering an immersive meditation on identity, ancestry, and the feminine creative force. Drawing from the classical South Indian dance traditions of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi, alongside Carnatic music and a compelling visual installation, the work reimagines maya not as illusion, but as a living field of transformation.
Speaking about the latest production ‘Maya’, Mr.Vijay Palaparty (Co-Artistic Director, Spilling Ink), said “Situated between the known and the unformed, Maya reflects on presence, perception, and awareness—on how reality shimmers, shifts, and resists remaining fixed. The performance turns toward uncertainty and the unknowable, embracing meaning as something discovered through lived experience rather than explanation. In doing so, it invites audiences into a contemplative space where identity remains fluid, layered, and expansively alive.”
Through its multisensory language, Maya positions lineage as both an anchor and a horizon. The work is deeply inspired by the musical lineage of master composer Madurai N. Krishnan, and the choreographic legacies of visionary and seminal dance artists Sudharani Raghupathy and K. Uma Rama Rao. These influences shape the performance as a living portal into ancestry, memory, devotion, and quiet resistance.
The work has taken form through close, process-driven collaboration rooted in shared listening and dialogue. The creative team includes Vijay Palaparty (Dance and Movement), Ramya Kapadia (Music), and Shanthi Chandrasekar (Visual Art), whose combined practices shape an immersive experience that foregrounds presence and awareness.
Presented and produced by Spilling Ink (Washington, DC), Maya will be staged on Sunday, January 25, 2026, beginning with a community chanting of the Lalitha Sahasranama Stotram at 10:15 AM, followed by the performance at 11:00 AM.
Audiences are invited to witness, to listen, and to simply be present with the work—allowing it to meet them in whatever way it unfolds.
