A Canteen by day, a modern Dive Bar by night, and a homecoming rooted in the coast

In a city shaped by the sea, cha and goli baje evenings, strong opinions and stronger memories, Kanara Kanteen opens as a space that feels instantly familiar. A canteen by day and a modern dive bar by night, Kanara Kanteen brings together the everyday food culture of South Canara with a playful, contemporary lens, travelling through time, to bring the best for today

It’s like a space you grew up eating at, that slowly shifts gears as the day unfolds, becoming a lively space where you can expect bare aaram, once the sun goes down

The Menu:

The food at Kanara Kanteen is shaped by everyday eating along the coast, think canteens, homes, long lunches, and evening snacks that turn into dinner. The menu moves easily between comfort and curiosity, following instinct rather than categories

Dishes like Amritsari Chole Buns and Kanteen Pomfret and Chips nod to familiar snack-time favourites, reworked with a fresh and flavourful twist. The Soft Shell Crab Pav and Silver Fish Tempura bring a mix street-style indulgence to dining, while the Coastal Crab Masala anchors the menu with bold and authentic spicy flavours the region is known for.

Dishes such as Modern Chakkuli Chat celebrate everyday canteen snacks, reimagined without losing their sense of comfort or familiarity.

Dessert like our signature Shahi Tukda with decadent Malai Rabdi, crispy golden nuts and a rose petal nest is a warm, nostalgic finish that feels exactly like it should, comforting and simple.

As the day shifts into night, Kanara Kanteen reveals its modern dive bar side.

The cocktail menu leans heavily into local memory, humour, and references that feel like the inside jokes you crack when you get together after a long time. Gujje Kolada captures the coast’s love for jackfruit and monsoon madness in a glass, while the Ay-Rekha Martini nods to the areca belt of the region, carrying the familiar aroma of betel leaf into a refined yet playful serve. Then there’s Gulf Return Uncle — a sweet-tart, nostalgic drink inspired by monsoon guavas, school-gate snacks, and the many stories that return home every summer.

A Space That Feels Lived In

Designed to feel approachable and unpolished in the best way, Kanara Kanteen’s interiors draw inspiration from the beautiful coastline of South Canara and the idea of retro-futurism. The space blends canteen-style seating and a central modern dive bar with steampunk-inspired thought, vintage typography, and intricate illustrations that hint at sci-fi and 1960s futurism.

Subtle retro-futuristic cues sit comfortably alongside everyday materials, creating an atmosphere that feels familiar yet slightly unexpected.

It’s a place to drop in for lunch, linger through the evening, or end the night without feeling rushed.

A Personal Return to Mangaluru

For Avinash, co-founder of Kompany Hospitality, Kanara Kanteen is a homecoming.

Originally from Mangaluru, this project marks a return to the city that shaped his earliest food memories, from canteen lunches and evening snacks to late-night conversations over drinks. After building well-known hospitality brands such as SOKA and Kalpaney, Kanara Kanteen is about bringing a new idea to the city that has given him so much.

“There are flavours and habits you grow up with that never really leave you,” says Avinash. “Kanara Kanteen comes from that place. It’s casual, it’s comforting, and it doesn’t try too hard. It just feels like it belongs here.”

From Kompany Hospitality, Rooted in the Coast

Kanara Kanteen is the newest project from Kompany Hospitality, the group behind SOKA and Kalpaney. While those brands have built strong reputations across cities, Kanara Kanteen remains firmly grounded in Mangaluru.
