A Sip of Kerala, Bottled
In a state known for its lush greenery, rich culture, and flavorful cuisine, Kerala now has something new to toast to—wine! Not just any wine, but fruit-based wines crafted from Kerala’s own harvest. Say hello to Nila Wines—an initiative from the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) that’s poised to change how India sees fruit wines.
With exotic flavors like banana, pineapple, and cashew apple, this wine isn’t just a drink—it’s a celebration of Kerala’s native bounty.
What Is Nila Wine?
Launched by the Department of Post-Harvest Technology at the College of Agriculture, Vellanikkara (under KAU), Nila Wine is the first officially excise-approved fruit wine brand from Kerala.
While India’s wine industry has mostly focused on grapes, Nila Wines breaks new ground by using tropical fruits that are abundant across Kerala. The idea? Add value to local produce, support farmers, and introduce the world to Kerala-style winemaking.
The First Three Flavors of Nila Wines
Cashew Apple Wine (14.5% ABV)
Made from fresh cashew apples grown in Mannarkkad, this wine offers a sweet, tangy experience with a light astringent twist. It’s bold and refreshing—ideal for experimental sippers.
Banana Wine (12.5% ABV)
Crafted from the delicious and aromatic Palayamkodan bananas, this is Kerala’s essence in a bottle. It has mild sweetness and a tropical finish that pairs beautifully with light appetizers.
Pineapple Wine (12.5% ABV)
Prepared from GI-tagged “Mauritius” pineapples of Kerala, this wine is bright, citrusy, and perfect for summer evenings.
Each wine goes through a 1-month fermentation period and is then aged for 6 months, resulting in depth, balance, and a smooth finish.
How Is It Made? Quality Comes First
