Most Iconic Fashion Dresses of All Time – Fashion and F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
Jennifer Aniston recently broke the internet with her first Instagram post featuring none other than her FRIENDS castmates and um, real-life friends. Set in the 90s the sitcom took over mainstream media and pop culture and still continues to thrive to this day as the greatest TV show of all time- an opinion some are deeply aversed to but I digress. From the iconic punch lines to couple goals scenarios to heartwarming friendship moments the show seemed to have it all, but one stand out feature was undoubted: it’s fashion moments.
Phoebe Buffay, Monica Geller and Rachel Green- three very different personalities with very different styles are a representation of 90s culture and everything that immediately preceded it in all its shades of eccentricity and coolness. Here are three outfit ideas inspired by the three characters you can use to emulate their normcore at first glance, iconic ever after looks:
High waisted jeans: The early 2010s saw the resurgence of everything vintage in mainstream pop culture and fashion with the rise of the quirky girl (think Taylor Swift during the RED era or Zooey Deschanel in New Girl) and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ chart-topping bop Thrift Shop. High waisted jeans are a defining fashion statement from the latter half of the 1900s, and they’re back with a bang after the low dip fashion took in the 2000s with the equally low waisted jean trend. Think Monica Geller with this one and branch out with its various styling possibilities. Wear it with a crop top, tie a scarf around it or a statement belt, it can be embroidered or embellished or go denim on denim with a denim shirt. Make it your own with whatever style you like. Be sure to pick the kind of jeans that go best with your body type.
High waisted jean bonus: they hide the muffin top that will inevitably make an appearance this holiday season.
The Mini Skirt: Propagated by Rachel on the show and introduced by Jean Shrimpton way back in the sixties in the form of a white shift dress at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne. It sparked controversy by being 4 inches above her knee marking a pivotal moment in women’s fashion. While the mini skirt may not be as controversial as it was back in the day it’s style quotient has certainly not been lost through the decades. Go Hit Me Baby-esque with a plaid schoolgirl skirt and white button-up, or lacey for a flirty feel or leather for that biker chic look.
The Midi and Maxi: Phoebe had the most eccentric style of them all, her wardrobe with an eclectic mix of bohemian, crazy and even psychedelic serves as a true inspiration to true fashion fanatics. Phoebe wore a ton of midis and maxis during the run time complimenting it with headbands, statement necklaces, and a whole load of pizzaz. Get your midis and maxis in a summer-friendly flowy fabric for the best effect- chiffons, light cotton, and georgettes work well. You can also experiment with the satin and get a midi or maxi that is iridescent and clings to your body in a shapely manner. Go full-on Rachel and opt for one that’s slit to the thigh for the ultimate glamazon look.
