Limit Your Sugar Intake

Limit Your sugar intake. It pays havoc on your skin. Sugar feeds bad bacteria, it releases hormones such as insulin and other androgenic hormones. This makes the skin sebum glands to overdrive thus resulting in spots.

Sugar is consumed in two forms: Simple Carbohydrates/Sugars (Cakes, biscuits, chocolates, fruit juices, soft drinks, alcohol) and Complex Carbohydrates/Sugars (Pasta, potatoes, rice, whole grains and legumes (like lentils, chickpeas, and kidney beans). Though these have higher nutritional value than simple carbohydrates but still get broken down into sugar by the body, so if acne is a problem for you then limit these.

Choose high-fibre alternatives like quinoa, brown rice, sweet potatoes, and beans and pulses, however, ensure to watch your portion sizes. Little to no grains are best. Consume Green vegetables over starchy carbohydrates wherever possible.

Eat Right

Your skin needs to be fed with the right food to keep it healthy and glowing. Since skin is the largest organ in your body. Consume essential fats found in oily fish like salmon and mackerel, avocados and nuts, and seeds. This helps to keep the skin plump and dewy, help to reduce inflammation and helps to balance hormones.

Dairy-Free Alternative

Say No to Dairy products, especially milk which negatively affects skin health in two ways.  First, because of the sugar in the milk and second, the hormones found in milk (milk got from pregnant and lactating cows contain high amounts of hormones which are then passed onto you). Try organic milk and if you still find your skin flaring up switch to dairy-free alternatives such as rice, oat, coconut or almond milk.

Liver-healthy Foods

This is crucial to achieving clear skin. Always consume food that supports and promotes good liver function include green, leafy and brightly coloured vegetables, berries, eggs, oily fish and nuts, and seeds. This helps the liver to function properly and clean out excess hormones and toxins from your body.  On the other hand, reduce consuming alcohol, sugar, and processed foods because it’s a burden on the liver.

Healthy Gut

As the skin is an excretory organ, the body tries to rid itself of the excess toxins through the skin, resulting in spots. So having a healthy digestive system is key. If you do not have regular bowel movements toxins build up in your body, causing inflammation to Increase your vegetable intake which helps to promote regular bowel movements. Avoid any foods your body has difficulty digesting (wheat and dairy).


Your body produces hormones to deal with stress, creating imbalanced hormone levels. Stress exacerbates spots. It also compromises our digestive and immune functions, making us more prone to breakouts. Manage your stress levels by doing yoga, and meditation and also just step out for a walk.
