World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2021

SIGNIFICANCE AND HISTORY OF WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT:

The sand area of the planet might not captivate many whereas some might have drawn to the sandy places of the world. On the other hand, drought is one of the most important issues which did not come to most people’s mind as it visualizes the picture of the dry and thirsted area. So, it is obvious that none would love to be there. However, many places have turned out to be drought areas due to the scarcity of water which is a sad reality. While we are ignoring the problems of desertification and drought, we are actually being deff-and-dumb to the lands calling us for help. Picture yourself the happy land with the tiny and huge grasses and trees and the lifeless land with drought which makes us heavy-hearted. However, we could combat the conditions of desertification (the fertile lands turn out to be desert due to deforestation, drought, and poor agriculture) and drought through awareness. While the land gifts uncountable things to mankind, we must protect and save the land. This is why United Nations General Assembly has been celebrating the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought that is observed on June 17th of each year.

The day was initially pronounced by United Nations General Assembly on January 30, 1995, right after the day of drafted UNITED NATIONS CONVENTION TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION. Then, it announced that the international day would be observed on June 17 each year. Several countries of the world have participated in the day since then. It would create awareness of the global issues of desertification and drought and how to combat these conditions and improving land health.

THE THEME FOR WORLD DAY TO COMBAT DESERTIFICATION AND DROUGHT 2021:

The infusion of themes to the global days would make it effective as it focuses on a particular issue and makes people aware of it. So, the theme for World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought 2021 is “Restoration. Land. Recovery.” It throws light on recovering the land and it would help level up the economy post-COVID 19 conditions.
