International Nurse Day – Origin And History

ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY: Well, here is a day to acknowledge and celebrate nurses. But to begin the celebration of the day, you definitely should know about the roots of the day or the history behind it or where it all started.

Back in 1953, Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare contacted President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposing a “Nurses Day.” But he did not approve of her proposal at that time. Later, The International Council of Nurses has celebrated on May 12th right from 1965.  Since then, May 12th has turned out to be an important day for all the nurses in the world. And the day has been the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale who is considered the founder of modern nursing.

Finally, the day was announced officially as International Nurses Day in January 1974. Since the day has been announced officially, ICN prepares and distributes International Nurses’ Day Kit which in turn contains educational and public information materials that would be useful for nurses everywhere. That’s how it becomes official with its deep roots from history.
