After Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi thriller “Tenet” being delayed indefinitely, Disney’s Mulan has been taken off release calendars.
Disney has pulled “Mulan” from the studio’s release calendar as cases of coronavirus continue to rise across the country and new outbreaks roil major foreign markets.
This is the fourth big-screen delay for “Mulan.” It was initially scheduled to debut on March 27, but the film was pulled just before its planned release as corona-virus first began to spread in North America. Disney moved the film to July 24 and then to Aug. 21 and it has been delayed indefinitely.
Mulan is based on the Chinese folklore “The Ballad of Mulan” and is a live-action adaptation of Disney’s 1998 animated film of the same name. Directed by Niki Caro, with the screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin, it is produced by Walt Disney Pictures, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.
The film stars Liu Yifei in the title role, alongside Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li in supporting roles.
With a production budget of 200 million, it is the most expensive film ever made by a female director. Mulan had its Hollywood premiere on March 9, 2020. However, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, its theatrical release was delayed.
