World Telecommunication Day!

Presently, The world of telecommunication has been developing by all means. So, what is telecommunication? It is nothing but communication that is done over a distance through cable, telegraph, or broadcasting is known to be telecommunication. Otherwise, it could be known as the transmission of signals, messages, words, writings, images, and sounds, or any type of information. It connects persons from distant places and makes them feel better.  It is not possible without this developing technology which makes you in better communication. The word communication is derived from the Latin word communication which is considered as the social process of information exchange. Well, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day throw light on how information travels across the world. The day has been dedicated to the evolution of communication, possibilities of using the internet and other information to bridge the digital divide. As per the fundamental human rights, they build people-centered, inclusive, and development-oriented information society.  However, it also exhibits how crucial communication is in our lives and kindles the development of technologies in the field.  Every year, the world celebrates the day on 17th May and focuses on the create awareness about the importance of communication and also focuses on increasing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

HISTORY OF WORLD TELECOMMUNICATION DAY: As the world has been celebrating the day of telecommunication, we gotta know about the background of the day. It was on 17th May 1969, the first World Telecommunication Day has been celebrated and it also commemorates the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 17th May 1865. It also signed the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. However, In November 2005, the World Summit on the Information Society made the UN General Assembly pronounce 17th May as World Information Society Day. Later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution that World Information Society Day on 17th May. Since May 2006, the world also has been celebrating the Information Society Day along with the telecommunication Day. Well, back in November 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey decided to celebrate together World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on 17th May. The modern world would not ignore the fact that the use of telephones, radio, and computers brought people together and closer. Whatever the development is in any field, it is important to pass the information travel around the globe. Thus, the day has been completely dedicated to the evolution of communication and how information travels all over the world. During this lockdown, we could not even meet our friends and relatives but we are staying connected with them and spreading happy messages through messages and phones. So, it is the perfect time to know about the evolution of communication and how it travels all over the world.

THEMES OF WORLD COMMUNICATION AND INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY DAY: Well, themes are imposed yearly on the celebration of the day to know more about the day and spread awareness to the people. This is why the UN General Assembly has been announcing themes for the important days. So, here are a few themes that were observed in previous years. The theme for 2016 was ICT entrepreneurship for social impact, it was Big Data for Big Impact in 2017, Enabling the positive use for Artificial Intelligence for All for 2018, for 2019 Bridging the standardization gap and for this year it’s going to be Connect 2030: ICTs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well. Howbeit, these themes would make the people understand the day and its importance much better.
