Today, the International Justice Mission organized a webinar on “Entitlement of Minimum Wage – A fundamental right”, between 11.AM and 12.30 PM.

The main speaker for this webinar was  Former  Chief  Justice of  India, Mr. Justice  P. Sathasivam. He addressed the participants on Minimum Wage and Fundamental Rights and said “ Any wage above the minimum wage but below the promised amount is a labour dispute but any wage paid below the minimum wage is a violation of Fundamental Rights. Minimum Wage is a Fundamental Right under Article 21 and 23 of the Indian Constitution. Non-Payment of Minimum Wage is illegal and a crime. The state has constitutional responsibility and employers have statutory responsibility in the issue of the minimum wage.  Non-payment of minimum wages or reluctance on the part of the employer in paying the minimum wage is not only illegal, inhumane, and immoral but also attracts criminal liability on the head of the employer”.

Dr. Carrie Pemberton Ford Executive Director and Founder Cambridge Centre for Applied Research in Human Trafficking, University of Cambridge spoke on Minimum Wages and International labour standards.

Dr. Shantanu Datta Senior Specialist Thought Leadership of International Justice Mission spoke on “Minimum Wage Impact sustainable economic recovery in India”

Mrs. Merlin Freeda, Director of Operations, International Justice Mission, Chennai, moderated the webinar.

The participants of the webinar included Media persons, Judges, Advocates, Prosecutors, Legal Service Authorities, Government Officials pertaining various departments like Revenue, Labour, Police, Social Welfare, Social workers, and NGO persons from across the Country.

The response from the participants was good and, in their feedback have expressed their appreciation for arranging such a webinar on a vital and important topic like minimum wages and as to how it is a fundamental right. The Visuals of the program herewith enclosed.
