Modak

Modak, also known as ‘ukkadiche modak’ in Maharashtra, is considered Lord Ganesh’s favourite sweet. In Tamil language, it is known as Kozhukattai. These sweet dumplings are made from rice flour or wheat flour dough and are filled with an amalgamation of jaggery and coconut mixture, flavoured with cardamom and saffron. Lord Ganesh is often depicted holding a modak in his hand, symbolizing the sweetness of life.

Recipe:

Modak

Ingredients:

• 1 cup rice flour

• 1/2 cup grated coconut

• 1/2 cup jaggery, grated

• 1/2 tsp cardamom powder

• A pinch of saffron strands

• 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)

• Water as needed

• A pinch of salt

Methods to Prepare:

1. Heat ghee in a pan and add the grated coconut, jaggery, cardamom powder, and saffron strands. Cook until the mixture thickens and the jaggery melts. Remove from heat and let it cool.

2. In a separate pan, bring water to a boil and add a pinch of salt. Slowly add the rice flour, stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cook until it forms a soft dough.

3. Allow the dough to cool slightly and then knead it into a smooth dough.

4. Take a small portion of the dough, flatten it in your palm, and place a spoonful of the jaggery-coconut mixture in the center.

5. Gather the edges and shape it into a modak.

6. Steam the modaks for about 10-15 minutes until they become firm and glossy.

Besan Ladoo

Besan ladoo, made from roasted gram flour (besan), ghee, and sugar, is another favourite sweet of Lord Ganesha. These round, golden delights are not only delish but also easy to prepare.

Besan Ladoo

Ingredients:

• 2 cups besan (gram flour)

• 1/2 cup ghee

• 1 cup powdered sugar

• 1/2 tsp cardamom powder

• A few chopped nuts (optional)

Methods to Prepare:

1. Heat ghee in a pan and add the besan. Roast it on low to medium heat until it turns aromatic and golden brown. Stir continuously to ensure even roasting.

2. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

4. While the mixture is still warm, shape it into small round ladoos.

Coconut Barfi

• 2 cups grated coconut

• 1 cup condensed milk

• 1/2 cup milk

• 1/2 tsp cardamom powder

• A pinch of saffron strands

• Ghee for greasing

Methods to Prepare:

1. In a pan, combine grated coconut, condensed milk, and milk. Cook on low heat, stirring continuously, until the mixture thickens and starts leaving the sides of the pan.

2. Add cardamom powder and saffron strands. Mix well.

3. Grease a tray or plate with ghee and transfer the coconut mixture into it.

4. Flatten and smooth the mixture with a spatula.

5. Allow it to cool, then cut it into squares or diamonds.

6. Offer the coconut barfi to Lord Ganesh and savour its delightful taste.
