Southern Spice, the country’s most iconic South Indian specialty restaurant at Taj Coromandel celebrates Madras Week with a Special Madras menu that takes us back in time. Promising the most-genuine culinary experiences, the team of chefs at Southern Spice led by Executive Chef Sujan Mukherjee has curated three elegant Thalis – vegetarian, non-vegetarian and seafood – inspired by the good old days when Chennai was known as Madras, and the menu reflects the flavours of those times!
Sip on delicious Vazhathandu Semiya Soup (Plantain pith and vermicelli soup from the streets of Mambalam) or theAatukkaal Soup With Kari Wada (Mutton leg bone soup with minced lamb galletes) for non-vegetarian. The vegetarian starter includes Marina bajji platter (an assortment of vegetable fritters served with spicy chutney- a specialty at the Marina beach); and Thattai aalavalli sandwich (Rice and lentil fritter layered with spicy tapioca), while non-vegetarians can savour Podi Yeral Milagu Roast (Shrimps from the Coromandel Coast slow cooked with shallots and chili on a griddle); Kovalam meen varuval (Garlic and chili marinated fish fried to perfection); and Karuvepilai kadama roast (Squid rings tossed in a curry leaf flavored masala and slow cooked).
The mains include Madras fish curry with ponni rice (A tangy and spicy fish curry relished best with steaming hot ponni rice); Pichupotta Kozhi (Shredded chicken tossed with succulent spices); Paruppu urundai Kara kozhambu (Lentil dumplings cooked in a tamarind and chili curry); Nandu puttu (Crab meat scrambled with onion and spices); and the much-loved Mutton Saalna with Idly (A flavorful home style lamb curry with stone ground spices). For those who like their Kothu Parotas, try the Vegetarian Kothu Parota or the Egg Kothu Parota.
Nothing ends a meal than mouthwatering desserts like the Boondhi with mukkani ice cream (Sweet dumplings served with a traditional fruit flavored ice cream); and Aval Payasam (Flat rice pudding).
