Two Oscars for India: World cheers as RRR chartbuster ‘Naatu Naatu’ makes history at 95th Academy Awards
It’s ‘Naatu Naatu’ day for India as RRR won the Oscar for the Best Original Song In a Motion Picture at the 95th Academy Awards, fending off fierce global competition – from no less than Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up’ from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Lady Gaga’s ‘Hold My Hand’ from Top Gun: Maverick.
The honour for ‘Naatu Naatu’ – the first for an original song in an Indian film – follows its other global recognitions at the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Award.
Composed by MM Keeravaani and penned by Chandrabose, the song has got people the world over shaking a leg and humming along.
There was more good news for India. ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ bagged the Oscar for the Best Documentary Short Film. The short currently streaming on Netflix is directed by Kartiki Gonsalves and has been produced by Guneet Monga.
‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ owned the Oscars 2023 winning Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Picture.

Women behind Tamil Documentary: ‘The Elephant Whisperers’
The Elephant Whisperers wins the Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards. The short, directed by Kartiki Gonsalves, was nominated for the Oscars alongside ‘Haulout’, ‘How Do You Measure a Year?’, ‘The Martha Mitchell Effect’ and ‘Stranger at the Gate’.
Marking her second win at the Oscars, Monga accepts the award in a traditional pink silk saree. Her documentary short film ‘Period. End of the Sentence’ won at the Oscars back in 2019. The women posing with awards at the Oscars clearly makes March more special post women’s day.
The third Indian nomination Shaunak Sen’s ‘All that Breathes’ won several awards at various International Film festivals but lost to ‘Navalny’ in the Best Documentary Feature Film category at the Oscars 2023.
