The most-celebrated Actor-Politician, Captain Vijayakanth, dies at the age of 71, due to pneumonia. Fondly called as Captain by Tamil Nadu people, the actor was one of the most admired actors and politicians in the state. His demise is not only a huge loss to Tamil Film Industry but also for the entire Tamil Nadu. As a mark of respect to Captain Vijayakanth’s demise, the Tamil movie shootings scheduled tomorrow are cancelled and the theatres have cancelled the morning shows in the state.

For his generous heart and revolutionary acting, Vijayakanth was praised by all and will be praised even after he was gone. He earned the title, “PURATCHI KALINGAR” or “Revolutionary Artist”. Hailed from Madurai, Vijayakanth made his debut in 1979 alongside MA Kaja’s “Inikkum Ilamai”. In SA Chandrasekhar’s directorial, he gave his hit film, “Sattam Oru Iruttarai.” Not only did he play appreciable lead roles but also acted as an antagonist initially and gained the love of Cinema fans. It was after playing the protagonist role as ‘Captain Prabhakaran’ which is actually the 100th film of Vijayakanth’s acting career, he owned the title, “Captain”.

The actor was actually a competitor to his fellow popular actors including Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth in Tamil Cinema. We even heard Kamal and Rajini remembering their fellow-actor and friend, Captain Vijayakanth, every time on the stage. Speaking of which, Vijayakanth’s had given 18 releases in a row in 1984. He, thus, turned out to be a record holder. The actor also shared screen space with the legendary actor, Sivaji Ganesan. Not to mention, he plunged into many crime thrillers in 90s.

Some of Captain’s notable films include “Sathriyan”, “Vaithehi Kaathirundhal”, “Amman Koil Kizhakkale”, “Oomai Vizhigal”, “Sethupathi IPS”, “Honest Raj”, “Ulavuthurai,” “Kannupada Poguthaiya”, “Periyanna”, “Vanathaipola”, “Narasimha”, “Thavasi” and “Ramana”. However, “Chinna Gounder” is one of the evergreen films starring Vijayakanth. It is an iconic creation that earned him lots of love from rural people.

“Antha Vanatha Pola Manam Padaitha Manavane…” is one of the best tracks from the film, “Chinna Gounder”. The lyrics, best suit, him both in reel and real life.

Well, the whole of Tamil Nadu admits it and we are no exception.

It was such an elongated and adventurous three decade-acting career for the most generous Captain. He did those “Action Hero” role, “Villain” role, “Lead” role, “Dutiful Police Officer” role and “Revolutionary” role throughout his career. Thereby, letting us know that he was one of the versatile actors in Tamil Cinema. Cut to 2005, Captain Vijayakanth ventured into Politics. He was contemplated as one of the important leaders in Tamil Nadu assembly election.

Throughout his life, Vijayakanth was known for his generousness and benevolence. The great human being will be remembered!!
