Why Karthik Subbaraj made a smaller film
The idea goes back to May 2025. While promoting Retro, Subbaraj said he had wanted to make a small-budget independent film after Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023). He had a complete script but paused it to focus on Retro. He formally announced the film on 10 November 2025, and shooting began that day in Madurai. Filming wrapped in late March 2026.

Ilaiyaraaja’s first film with Karthik Subbaraj
The music is one of the film’s big draws. This is Ilaiyaraaja’s first collaboration with Subbaraj, and he wrote all the lyrics. Three singles came out before release: “Kalyana Virundhu” on 22 August, the trance number “Muthumani” on 29 August, and “Onna Thottu” on 24 September, a day before the film opened.

Avinash Ramachandran of Cinema Express said the film gives an arthouse concept a masala treatment.
Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in called it a terrific subversion of the conventional Tamil film romance, while noting some avoidable bloat and overwrought scripting. Anupama Chopra liked the performances, music and technical craft, but found the film’s sharp turns and central twist inorganic. Prathyush Parasuraman of The Hollywood Reporter India singled out its structure. The past is in colour and the present in black and white, the reverse of the usual nostalgia-in-monochrome approach.

In late August, Tamil producer bodies announced that Tamil films could not release or continue post-production from 1 September, amid a dispute with distributors and exhibitors. That put the release in doubt. The decision was reversed about a week later, and Dorothy went ahead as planned, distributed in Tamil Nadu by Sakthi Film Factory.
