Netflix has dropped the first look images of the upcoming film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The film will see Chadwick Boseman in his last role along with Viola Davis. It is directed by George C. Wolfe.

The official handle Netflix dropped back to back four new stills from the forthcoming movie. They captioned it, “Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman star in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a new film based on August Wilson’s award-winning play from director George C. Wolfe and producer Denzel Washington. @MaRaineyFilm premieres December 18”

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name by August Wilson. Centred on the story of legendary blues singer Ma Rainey played by Viola Davis, the film will take on the issues of racial tension and discrimination faced by Black musicians in 1927 Chicago.

The film also casts Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman, Michael Potts, Taylour Paige and Dusan Brown in pivotal roles. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is produced by Denzel Washington and Todd Black.

The official synopsis read, “Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago as a band of musicians await trailblazing performer, the legendary “Mother of the Blues,” Ma Rainey (Viola Davis). Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee (Chadwick Boseman) — who has an eye for Ma’s girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry — spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives.

Chadwick Boseman died on august 28 after he was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016.

The film releases on December 18, 2020.
